“Netflix Strikes Groundbreaking Deal with U.K. Writers and Agents”

Netflix, in collaboration with the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) and the Personal Managers’ Association (PMA), is making history with a one-of-a-kind agreement that will revolutionize the compensation of U.K. writers.

This groundbreaking deal, announced earlier in the week, specifically pertains to writers working on scripted live-action series commissioned by Netflix in the U.K. It will also be applied retroactively, starting from February 1st. This marks the first time a streaming company has signed an agreement with both the WGGC and PMA.

“We believe local writers are the driving force behind Netflix’s success in the U.K. and we are delighted to have this agreement in place,” stated Anne Mensah, director of U.K. content for Netflix.

Ellie Peers, general secretary of WGGB, added, “This is an exciting development for U.K. writers, as it guarantees their rights through a collective trade union agreement with an international streaming company for the first time. This also means better regulations and guidelines for their work. We are thrilled to have established this agreement with Netflix.”

According to the PMA, the agreement signifies a major milestone for U.K. writers in terms of compensation. It moves away from the previous practice of granting writers’ rights to companies indefinitely and instead introduces a payment structure that ensures continued financial support for their work.

The WGGB has released a summary of the key terms of the agreement with Netflix, with a more comprehensive version expected to be available for its members soon. Under the contract, writers will receive a minimum script-writing fee of PS17,000 ($21,700) for a one-hour program, along with an additional PS15,000 ($19,200) minimum fee for scripts for a full-length series. The agreement also includes a period of six months for Netflix to utilize global and non-theatrical rights, as well as promotional rights.

As negotiations continue, there is great anticipation for the potential positive impact this agreement could have on the future of U.K. writers.
